So why this day, and what is there to do other than watch it trend on Twitter? As legend has it, and according to the origin story recognized by Lucasfilm, the phrase was first used on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as UK prime minister. The Conservative party allegedly placed an ad in the London Evening News which read, "May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations."
It took off in the social media life, where it has become a huge deal every single year and finally expanded to real-life with events in Toronto. Now, there are events celebrating the day worldwide. How crazy and exciting is this? I would love to go to one of these! My brother is a huge fan so I'm sure he knows all about this.
Even stores are celebrating! I opened my emails up to PacSun, Journeys, and even GameStop celebrating "May the Fourth Be With You" with some exclusive deals and merchandise. Whether you choose to partake in these events, or be sidelined and just be a spectator, I guarantee you that you will be entertained. I recommend you join in on the fun. Start randomly telling people, "May the Fourth Be With You". Maybe film some reactions or take some pictures of their reactions and post them to YouTube or post those pictures up on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #MayThe4thBeWithYou
If you live on the East Coast as I do then your day is half way over. If you live on the West Coast then you still have time to do these fun things listed below.
- Watch the movies with an adult beverage (or not). An infused water is perfectly fine.
- Be charitable - UNICEF and Lucasfilm/Disney have joined forces with a wearable power band that allows fans, young and old, to get moving and help children in need around the world.
- Stay at home and throw your own party. I'm sure you can google some Star Wars recipes.
- Get out your stormtrooper costume and go play with your friends or your kids! Because kids aren't the only ones allowed to dress up, adults can too!
