Walgreens Balance Rewards Program Lets You Earn Points for Healthy Behavior

What if every step you took was helping to put money back in your pocket? With the latest update in Walgreens’ rewards program, that idea is becoming a reality.
As of today, Walgreen Co., which owns Walgreens and Duane Reade drugstores, has finished integrating its Balance Rewards program across all of its stores, according to AdAge. In addition to earning points on prescriptions and weekly featured items, shoppers can now also join the Steps with Balance Rewards program, which tracks (and rewards) healthy habits.
So, how does it work?
After registering in the Steps program, members can log their exercise online manually or sync all physical activity automatically through one of the program’s supported devices. Every mile you walk or run earns you 20 points, and you can also receive an additional 20 points a day just by tracking your weight.
If you’re nabbing points for physical activity while simultaneously earning them for store purchases, they can add up quickly: Every 5,000 points accumulated in the Balance Rewards system gets you a $5 Walgreens gift card.
Currently, the Steps program supports four devices: BodyMedia, FitBit, scale products from Withings and the Walgreens App, which is available in the App Store or Google Play. For every device you connect, you earn an additional 250 points (up to 500 points a month).
According to AdAge, only around 1% of Balance Rewards members are currently using the new Steps program, and “the vast majority [are] doing it manually rather than transmitting the information via devices.”
